Deputy Dawg came into our home as a foster dog.  He was about 6 months old and was very fearful of other dogs.   My father just happened to be on sick leave for an extended period of time while his hand healed from a flyball injury.   So, Mel and Deputy spent many days together, their bond grew and Deputy never left.  Deputy loves to play ball and cuddle in bed.  Iggy is his best friend.  Deputy hates car rides and prefers to stay at home on the couch.

Deputy Dog, Guard Dog

Deputy Dog, Guard Dog came to us a very fearful dog.  He did not ever want to leave our home when we would leave to do dog sports with our other dogs.   He wanted to stay home where he knew he was safe - so we thought. When there was no one to stay home with Deputy, we would have to take him with us.   When we would try to put on his collar, he would run and put himself in a crate.  We would have to pull him out and drag him to the car.  After he adjusted, he would settle and actually have a good time away from home.

However, when we would get home, he would run out into the back yard and survey the perimeter of our yard just in case someone would dare invade our property while he was gone.   You see, that was Deputy’s job.  He kept watch over our yard and house so no harm would ever come to his family.  We gave him a safe haven and he, in turn, protected us.  He would stand watch at night.  He would let us know if there was a fox, groundhog, or cat on our driveway.  My neighbor said she liked the fact that he watched out the window.  She said she felt safe gardening in the wee hours of the morning.  She knew Deputy would alert her if someone was around.

As part of being a Guard Dog, Deputy was also a Deer Hunter.  Every night he would charge the fence to let the deer know he was the boss.  The deer became accustomed to Deputy’s rules.  They would acknowledge him by lifting there heads, then go back to grazing.

On November 7, 2009, we had to put Deputy down because he had cancer.   We found the mass on his stomach in September and it quickly spread.  The funny thing was that during this time we went to many flyball tournaments and had to take Deputy with us.   When we would get ready to leave, he would not run and hide like usually had done in the past.  Instead, he would run and jump in the van.

I told my husband that I think Deputy is telling us it is ok and that he will be fine when his time came.  I think he was saying thank you to us for the life we gave him.

Since Deputy has been gone the deer have not been grazing. We do not see them anymore.  We now set our house alarm.   Deputy’s purpose and gift to us was to give us security, something I did not realize until he was gone.

I miss my buddy.  Rest well, Deputy Dog, Guard Dog.  Thank you for being a part of our lives.
